Before the Interview
Before your interview, set aside time to do the following:
- Be a few minutes early to test your camera, audio and internet connection.
- Download the meeting software ahead of time.
- Dress professionally. It is better to overdress for an interview, even if daily work wear is business casual.
During the Interview
After you’ve spent time preparing, you can be successful during the interview by practicing these tips:
- Feel free to take notes.
- Retain eye contact – even virtually this is incredibly important! We recommend having your credentials available for reference, but be sure to keep your focus on the hiring manager or recruiter.
- You may be asked about what media you like to consume such as recent books, movies, podcasts, and audiobooks, so be prepared with your answer.
- Ask questions. Here are some suggested prompts:
- What are the specific job responsibilities for this role?
- May I have an overview of the department?
- What makes an employee/intern successful? How is that success measured?
- How do you prefer to check in with your intern/employees? How regularly?
- Don’t forget to ask the hiring manager(s) questions about themselves. Some suggestions are:
- How long have you been with the company?
- What do you like about your job/the company?
- Are there future projects you are excited about?
- What is your typical day like?
After the Interview
When your interview is over, give yourself the best chances of moving forward by doing the following:
- Send a thank you email. Even if you decide that the job isn’t right for you, sending a thank you note is a nice gesture and is appreciated.
- The email should be sent within 24 hours of your interview. Try to refer to something that was discussed during your meeting, such as, “I really enjoyed hearing about what goes into planning a book tour. Good luck with x event!”
If You Aren’t Selected for the Role
Please don’t be discouraged if you aren’t chosen for the position. There are many factors as to why this may occur, and it doesn’t mean you won’t be the right fit for another role within the company.
