Résumé Tips

A well crafted résumé is clear, concise, and relevant to the open position.

  1. Start with your most recent and/or most relevant experience. (Experience can include work history, coursework, published works, extracurricular activities, etc.)
    • Be specific about your experiences and tailor them to the role you are interested in.
    • If formatting chronologically, begin with your most current role, then work backwards.
    • Use bullet points for easy reading and to highlight specific goals and actions from previous experiences that would translate well to the role you are applying for.
  2. List accolades that you are proud of that demonstrate behaviors relevant to the role. For example, if the job description requires leadership skills, list achievements or leadership positions such as team captain or club president.
  3. Keep your résumé to one page, especially for entry-level jobs.
  4. Copyedit the document if it becomes longer than one page. Narrowing the margins may also help if you need to condense.
  5. Proofread before submitting. Ensure that dates are accurate and grammatical errors are corrected.
  6. Read your résumé aloud to flag any mistakes you may have missed.
  7. Save your résumé as “Last Name, First Name Résumé” and upload the document as a PDF.
